Screening:
Audrey Selemela Speech Therapy also provides screenings at schools and nursery schools where a quick assessment is performed across selected
areas. This will allow us to be able to determine whether a child presents with speech-language or hearing difficulties. Early detection and
intervention are of critical importance as these can change a child's future. Early intervention has specific goals which according to ASHA,
(1989) are Prevention, Remediation and Compensation.
Prevention:
To hinder the occurrence of a communication disorder or delay by providing Early Intervention (EI) services to at-risk children and their
families before an official diagnosis of a communication disorder is made.
Remediation:
To provide EI services to children and their families who have already been diagnosed with a communication disorder or delay to decrease the
long term occurrence or adverse impact that the communication disorder could possibly have on children later in life.
Compensation:
To provide effective and functional communication strategies or intervention to children and their families with disabilities or impairment
that is irreversible to increase the children’s quality of life.
Assessments:
Audrey Selemela Speech Therapy also provides in-depth Speech-Language assessments across all areas. This is essential prior to therapy as
this will identify areas of difficulty and strength. Furthermore it will also provide a starting point at which goals for therapy can be set
and therapy can commence. Therapy goals and programs are always set in accordance to the specific requirements of the client thereby providing
highly individualized therapy programs.
Workshops:
Audrey Selemela Speech Therapy also offers a series of workshops for parent, family members as well as teachers in the areas mentioned above.
These areas include Early Language Development and Stimulation, School-age speech and language difficulties as well as among others, Supported
Conversation strategies for families or significant others of clients who have suffered a stroke (CVA) or brain injury (TBI).
